Esperanza
I spent some time in the inhabited dump in Chenendega Nicaragua. I found Esperanza sitting in a cloth sling attached to a pole in the yard in front of her tin clad home. Her name in English is Hope. Esperanza has a look of worry as she watched me “the white woman with a camera” coming nearer. I spoke with Esperanza and she told me that she wished she could go to school. She could read, but there were no books. It was her hope to leave the dump someday with her family. The little boy is her brother Pedrito. His face is dirty too, but he is so happy!
The light was soft upon her faces. Her features are without lines and have little color gradations. This is very difficult to recreate in fiber. It is important to choose the correct colors and blend them carefully in order to achieve a smooth representation of skin in thread.
